The Great Sierra River Clean Up

The Great Sierra River Cleanup!

September 15, 2012

The Great Sierra River Cleanup is the premier volunteer event focused on removing trash and restoring the health of waterways throughout the Sierra Nevada Region. This cleanup is an annual event coordinated by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and held in conjunction with California Coastal Cleanup Day.

Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event on behalf of the marine environment in the world with over 350,000 volunteers participating in 70 countries across the world.  Since the event was started in 1985, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 13 million pounds of debris from our State’s shorelines and waterways.

In 2011, the Susanville area gathered over 90 volunteers to remove over 1,500 lbs of trash from the Susan River and Paiute Creek.  That is a huge contribution and we would love to make it much larger this year.

The Great Sierra River Cleanup is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a day for Sierra communities – and those from all over California – to demonstrate their desire for clean water and healthy rivers. It’s an opportunity to learn about California’s water source and it’s a time to come together with your families, your neighbors, your community, and your friends to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our great Sierra rivers.

Individuals or groups of any size and age are welcome.

We would like to encourage everyone to sign up early, but we welcome day-of registration.

All participants should arrive at Memorial Park by 9 am to be ready to work.  A site captain will be at each site to sign you in and distribute supplies.  Captains will provide latex gloves, trash and recycling bags, data cards, pencils, a safety briefing, and directions on where to cleanup at each site.

Please bring or wear the following:

  • Closed toed shoes
  • Work gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Filled water bottle and snack
  • Paint bucket if you want to help with cleaning up broken glass (we have a few)
  • Work clothes
  • Please bring your own trash bags from home to help us reduce waste produced by this event!

A waiver form is required by each person participating in the River Cleanup. We will have waiver forms available at the site, but we recommend printing the form prior to the event to speed up the registration process.  If a participant is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must sign the waiver prior to participation.

Please contact Jessica at (530) 257-3252 or projects@llttweb.org with any questions.

We look forward to working with everyone to clean up our waterways!
